Excerpts from today's Washington Post chat with Marion Barry:
    --

Also, housing prices in DC have gone through the roof. The average salary for a residence in Ward 8 is $16,000 a year. If you consider that 1/3 of a salary goes for housing, this person cannot live in DC, unless they find a chicken coop for $7,000. I would like to keep people in Washington from being forced out of their own neighborhoods.

[This auditor points out that 7k is 43.75% of 16k, or 583/mo]

    --

70 percent of all the jobs in Washington, D.C. itself are held by 70 percent of non-DC residence.

[49% of dc jobs are held by suburbanites?]

    --

I don't think we need a baseball stadium in D.C. I like baseball, play it myself, but it is not a priority. The owners of many of these teams are sticking these cities up for $3 or 4 million and these cities are so anxious to have a baseball team that they are paying the price.

[umm, I think that's *hundred* million]

    --

I guess my point is that we don't have a numbers guy here.

    Bonus
At my firm we usually get a bonus after working on any particularly long job. So after spending the months of Feb & Mar pouring my time (if not soul) into a client, I expected something big.

Well it came today. My thank-you, appreciation $10 Best Buy gift card. No note.

I can't stand airlines! this is the worst yet.. a trip from 7/26-8/17 (yeah it's suddenly longer now--hopefully) is $930 from dulles to madrid, connecting at JFK. So then I tried searching JFK-Madrid, giving me $650 but connecting thru miami. Then I tried Miami-Madrid, giving me $925 and I checked, they are the SAME flights the ny trip uses.

I guess, all this crap aside, it means there has to be a bargain out there somewhere. And i'm going to find it.

I just found out that I'm on-call this weekend, which means I could be called 24h/day to help out with any accounting emergencies. I'm going to charlottesville anyway, because I really don't care. (I mean if they fire me, well, ok?) anyway..

Last weekend in charlottesville was lots of fun and had an super-sexy twist, as [info]'s LJ recounted. I also made the requisite visits to tj maxx and rugged, which are 10x better in c-ville than dc. Unfortunately we didn't make it to any of the few restaurants i've been craving to stop back by (Guada, Mono Loco, Maharaja) but there's this wknd for that (albeit while fighting foxfields crowds).

    yay!
I'm typing this from (omg!) my desktop computer, as finally yesterday my landlord had the carpet people in and FINALLY my house is back in order!

"Order" used loosely, of course... but a lot closer than before :)

Anyway, work is a lot softer lately; I'm mo-happy about that. Other than happy hour fri night and 8 hrs of work on saturday my weekend is beautifully care-free! oh freedom

I haven't LJ'd in a while because absolutely nothing is happening. Work is scaled down to a more manageable 55ish hours. I had a cold over the weekend which has kept me in. It is ash wednesday and i'm eating meat and feeling guilty.

My car is in the shop, and I reflected this morning while driving ilsa (thanks [info]esti626) on how ilsa and my car were bought at the same time, and this one single trivial-seeming repair will cost the entire amount of ilsa's purchase plus all repairs since then (with money to spare). I think i'll be eating canned vegetables for a while.

I'm looking forward to going to puerto rico in may with my favorite CPA study partner and his favorite sexual partner. And.. maybe.. someone else to make it not wierd.

    Work Entry
Omg I feel so good--the "end" is more or less here. I got off last night at 8:30, (felt like 2pm) went home, ran the dishwasher for the first time, and went the hell to bed. Best night ever.

(billed 90 hours the week ending last friday night, and 35 more since then)

Now I get my sundays back, work late 3 nights a week, and shorter saturdays. woohoo!

(in other words extra time to prepare/send resumes)

    Skiing!
I kicked and punched and got 22 continuous hours off from work this weekend and went skiing. It was with my favorite governmental auditor, Mike, his bf, and three other guys I didn’t know. Side note, they all knew each other from “20’s group”, a group that meets in a church weekly and talks about.. well.. I don’t know. It sounds a whole lot like QSU, etc.

We stayed at the clarion, a harsh reminder of the meaning of 1 star. Ew. Got to the ski slopes at 8, tubed for an hour. Tubing sucks. It was, however, a chance to get to know the guys I was with, v-fun. We then skied for three hours that alone made the trip worthwhile. I was glad that my group together decided that the fun in skiing was from the act, not hanging with people, and they didn’t mind splitting up.

Dinner at ultra-hick denny’s (w/ fight in parking lot). Late-night 10 minute swim in hotel pool until manager shooed us away. Ol’ miller lite. On Sunday I went to the outlet mall in hagerstown, which I expected to be an outlet mall (i.e. suck), but I was pleasantly surprised to get two pair of regular gap khakis for $6/e.

    Take-aways from the weekend:
    1. If you swear off talking about work, you are a lot more interesting.
    2. If you don’t want to come out to your housemate, don’t invite him to ski and stay overnight with your five gay friends.
    3. If you want your bed back, ask for it, don’t sit for two hours making subtle suggestions.
    4. On a more practical side, hanes t-shirts might seem cheap, but at least they (ahem banana!) mastered the tag that doesn’t itch all fucking day.

Yesterday was just one of those "worst day ever" sorts of deals. First I have a crappy day at work, which is about par for the course now because it's miserable. SO around 9pm my 'boss' brings in another table and says that I'm moving from the rather nice workspace on one end of the room to a cramped one in between 3 women who I can't stand. Post-work argument ensues with guy next level up. Anyway, crappy mood maintained, I left work (10:30p), went and hung with [info]bougrelasxiv for a bit, during which i probably didn't do other than bitch and moan (sorry) but I don't know how people have real lives working this much (suggestions, [info]kobenhavn)? The kicker of all this is I went home at midnight to find a sign in the elevator saying that a heater pipe burst and we had no heat. Luckily it was fixed.. but of course it was in the UNIT ABOVE MINE.. ugh! I guess i could have fared worse, as the leaking water just barely missed my computer desk and TV table, and it was worst in teh corner where I had my diploma sitting on the floor with a trash-bag over it (not really damaged visibly). Afaik I have to reupholster one of my dining chairs now, and it ruined a couple shirts, and a few books, papers, etc. Maybe today will be better..

I was told today that my work schedule for the next 3 weeks will be 8:30a-10p m-r, til 6 friday, 8-9hrs on saturday and, after this weekend, sunday. This was followed by assurance that we will get valentine's night off, but we will have to be in at 9 the next morning to work almost into monday.

Then my mgr. left at 8. grrr

My personal rebellion is to swear off coffee. Let's see how long I can last...

Btw, I haven't disappeared, but work has been soooo crazy.. but significant things in my life: 1. I'm getting a dishwasher, yay 2. had lots of fun last wknd going out all three nights (first time in a *while*) 3. visited the new air/space museum in dulles, pretty cool place 4. Tomorrow is my last day on the client i'm on, might be working all weekend (then back to client in rosslyn). 5. So little is going on that this is all i can think of. At least i'm not yet too far over 50hrs (ok, matt, feel free to scoff)

    Political post...run!
Of course I join just *everyone* in being pissed that the iowans overwhelmingly care more about economic conditions under bush than the whole iraq war and terror hysteria.. so this is the sole nice thing I have to say about bush:

What's up with everyone judging bush based on economic conditions?! do we live in a society where the gov is expected to control industry! well apparently, but really.. I submit that the more we expect politicians to create prosperity the more fake that prosperity will become (and, *cough*, communist).

    just like school
I woke up at 4:30a-ish to work on stuff I took home for the weekend, but unlike school assignments I actually finished it with time to spare.. oh well too late to go back to bed though. What did people do at 6:30a before the internet? I guess watch a morning show? (puke) Anyway..

This weekend.. left work at 7p friday even though a huge priority sprang up at, like, 3p, but obv I took it home for the wknd.. Picked up esti and went and saw http://www.rorschachtheatre.com/archive/flood/aftertheflood.pdf .

In a very american-passtime-like way the weekend was dominated by shopping; saturday went to H&M downtown with esti and mike meg. and sunday to our fav wal*mark and trader joe's, both of which had terribly long lines and I overspent and didn't have much fun in the process..

The highlights of the weekend: Went to Rosa Mexicano for dinner on Saturday with Diane.. I'm *so* happy to see a new nice Mexican restaurant (it's a NY transplant), and even if we were told 2.5 hours for a table (we ate at the bar, alas) it was worth it (though PS after an hour they would have seated us). The tortilla soup was amazing, and the things they are well-known for are guacamole, which tasted great, but salty (actually tasted just like I used to make it, so i was gratified) and pomegranate margaritas, which aren't very froofy but pack a huge punch with tequila (and aren't badly priced at all). Also went on Sunday to see the Caps play against the Edmunton Oilers, which rocked because the Caps *actually* won! (doesn't happen very often this season). Also rocked because Steve came across sixth-row tickets.

I want to go to NYC next weekend, but I have been warned that I'll probably have to work.

    btw
just a big btw... but today I was in the lunch room of the client-of-the-week and there was a DC job rights poster... and I was surprised to see that among things that one can't discriminate based on in DC is matriculation!

I don't know what it is about exercising.. but this was an extraordinarily blah last four days; nothing went quite right. I rollerbladed for two hours today and, while I can barely move my legs now, I feel sooo much better. I wouldn't think that such an act that makes no real impact on my life can change my mood so much.

Anyway, this is my last day of freedom before the much-despised "accounting busy season" starts. I am told from coworkers to make my friends expect to not see me much, and this is everyone's fair warning. Otoh, f-work.

Side note, 2 friends/siblings had cars broken into this weekend. *!*

blah. That's really all i can say, since things are boring. I'm meeting with my ex-sales rep today to officially liquidate my old biz, and shopping for a suit at Men's Wearhouse because not one suit-selling store at pentagon city sells my size (at least this time, unlike last, I wasn't advised to go to Mcdonalds more often).

This weekend was alright, though I'm starting to question whether I have any fun going out to clubs/bars. But what else is there for a gay man to do? Otherwise, I finished/built the rest of my wine racks so it's no longer all haphazardly stacked on my shelves. And drank a few bottles :)

I hate this indiscriminate busting on ol' saddam. I mean cut a fallen dictator some slack.

    anyway,

After my sister complained about the lack of family unity, I now lost my first chance to have freedom on christmas day. ugh. On a lighter note, I'll be at my aunt's house, where there is always a good supply of cookies and bourbon.

I finally figured out how to move stuff from the replaytv to my computer (alas, it's really easy).. now just to transfer stuff into files that are small enough to keep around.. I have had a revolution in computer usefulness ever since Esti pointed out that one service, winmx, survived the mass fallout of file sharing.

I am going to the sculpture garden tonight to skate with some people from work. 8-10.

Seeing everyone finishing up their semesters is giving me a hard time.. I need a break, too :(

Yesterday I sat in a lecture hall in training at u.md for 8 hours with the entire dc audit group.. it was soooo boring, but I have to say I passed the test. (my eyes never closed for more than 20ish seconds). So this gave me a whole day to haunt myself with my own thoughts *shiver* and obsess over the various goings-on in my life. And text-message Jordan.

This is very interestarring.. I am always glad to see someone who is a clear partisan at least *seem* to show objective thought/opinion on an issue..
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A52956-2003Dec10.html

At the training yesterday I talked to someone about dress for the office christmas party on saturday. He reinforced Esti and co's recommendations that I wear a tuxedo, but he warned me that no matter how prepared, mentally sound, coupon-wielding, etc, you are, you will not leave a rental place without dropping $100. He was right. I went in with a "you get everything for $60" coupon i printed off the web, but that came with a regular shirt, bowtie, etc. Of course the person sold me up to a regular tie, vest, and shoes, adding $40. SO yes, it came to $104.50. ugh; can't win.
